    Sustainability For Kids Workshop

At our recent Sustainability for Kids workshop, children learnt about the importance of the 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They were shown how to make beeswax wraps and planters from recycled milk containers. Learning these skills will build their sense of optimism, confidence, enthusiasm and connection to make a positive difference to the world. #BethaniaStreetCommunityGarden #events #sustainability

    Thanks to Brisbane City Council

We recently installed some cypress mulch between some areas of our garden beds to reduce the area needing mowing and whippersnipping. The mulch and weedmat were purchased from a Brisbane City Council grant. This grant has also provided funding to cover much of our maintenance and consumable costs for the year. As always, we are very grateful for the ongoing support of Brisbane City Council. #BrisbaneCityCouncil #BethaniaStreetCommunityGarden

    New garden edging

The first of our 2018 projects to be completed is the installation of new edging for the Fruit Grove. This will make mowing easier and keep mulch in place more effectively, helping with water efficiency. Thanks Craig and Tony. We are using Eco Decking (or Modwood) which is manufactured from recycled plastic containers and reclaimed wood. It is a sustainable alternative to timber. Another water saving project will be the installation of a wicking bed later in the year. #Garden

    Gardening Bee

The Gardening Bee workers focused on specific tasks in the garden, which the Wednesday gardeners decided they needed help with. These included pruning the pigeon peas that had grown to monster proportions. These pioneer plants. which also helped fix nitrogen into the soil, were great to start off our food forest, shading our young fruit trees, protecting them from the winds and sharing some nitrogen as well. By 'chopping and dropping' we used the prunings as mulch. Thank good
