Infestation of Bitter Melon

Recently Brisbane City Council officers and volunteers from the Lota Habitat group spent many hours clearing a massive patch of Bitter Melon, Mormodica charentia, at Melaleuca Park. Bitter Melon is currently a highly invasive weed in local bushland areas and has really taken off after the recent wet weather. As a vegetable it has many benefits, however, if grown in veggie gardens, bitter melon can easily escape into the local environment.

Therefore, it is recommended that it should not be grown as a backyard vegetable.
